When renovation began in 2003 on the Cloister at Sea Island Resort, architects sought to create an atmosphere that guests and their families would remember.
Throughout the reconstruction at the Cloister, every aspect of the hotel’s redesign had
to coincide with the expectations of its prestigious clientele. Since 1928, the Cloister has been welcoming esteemed guests and families to Sea Island, Georgia, including celebrities, royalty, and U.S. presidents and their families. In fact, George W. Bush used the hotel for the 2004 G8 Summit.
Prominent Features
Concealed door closers were frequently utilized to offer unobtrusive door control and to blend seamlessly with the hotel’s décor. DORMA’s
ITS96-1 overhead concealed door closers feature field-adjustable spring power as well as sweep and latch adjustment. DORMA’s BTS80 floor-concealed door closers were also used. Because they can control exceptionally heavy single- and double-
acting doors, BTS80 closers can be incorporated into almost any design to meet most material, size, and weight requirements.
DORMA’s 8900 Series surface-applied door closers were placed in corridors throughout the hotel—chosen for their appearance, narrow projection, and durability, as well as features such as spring power adjustment, self-adjusting backcheck, and optional delayed action. The 8900 door closers can be tailored to any specific application using specialty arms, plates, and brackets.
The Cloister incorporated DORMA’s CL800 Series
Grade 1 heavy-duty cylindrical locksets throughout the hotel. The CL800 locks deliver an exceptionally smooth operation, have superior strength, and feature an extended service life for the lock mechanism.
The Cloister also combined DORMA’s ML9000 Series mortise locks with Rocky Mountain Hardware on the exterior to give entryways a distinctive look. The ML9000 locks are built with stainless steel for strength and durability. They include special, high-strength springs and a positive stop to eliminate unsightly sagging levers, and a specially hardened steel hub design to prevent damage to the lock and lever handles.
Useful accessories complement the standard hardware package. Composed of a door-mounted catch plate and a floor- or wall-mounted electromagnet, DORMA’s
EM Series paired door holders provide controlled release and closure of doors throughout the facility. Along with door holders, the architects integrated a GSR coordinator system that enables doors to close sequentially. And with the streamlined appearance of the GSR coordinator system, the Cloister received outstanding control with minimal visual obstruction.
