Harley Davidson's iconic style, plus its manufacturing roots in the city, inform every aspect of the Museum’s design and construction.
Surrounded by water on three sides, the 20-acre plot lies in the city’s old industrial district. For the three-building Museum complex, builders restored a lost street grid, reconnecting the site to the rest of the city. The grid also defines building locations and provides a venue for biker gatherings. For design inspiration, architects studied old photographs of local factories and observed how similar in construction they were to the way Harley Davidson motorcyles have always been made. “The parts are not concealed behind plastic or metal, but are simply and honestly expressed as structure, function and, most significantly, as a jewel of an engine within the frame of the bike.”
Prominent Features
Inside and out, the Harley Davidson Museum expresses an urban-, factory-style design reflecting the history and culture of its iconic motorcycles. DORMA products on doorways throughout the Museum fit perfectly into this aesthetic—meeting functional requirements in a form defined by modern styling and a wide choice of architectural finishes. Installed DORMA products include 8900 Series Heavy-Duty Door Closers, 5000 Series Narrow Stile Exit Devices, LM Series Pivots, and BTS80 Concealed Door Closers.
